What do you do when your reduced financial circumstances make it impossible to make the monthly rent or house payment? As a newly divorced single parent with two small children, this is where I found myself.
Well, how about renting out that extra room in your house or apartment? Clean it up, remove all the junk it has accumulated over the years, and place an advertisement in the local paper (or nowadays on the internet): Roommate Wanted! It seemed a logical response to my dilemma.
HOWEVER...
I learned the hard way that acquiring roommates is a business and MUST be handled like one. After making lots of mistakes (some of them downright dangerous), I analyzed my actions, noting which ones worked and which ones didn't. Realizing that there were many people who could learn from my experiences, I penned the self-help manual SORRY, THE BOA HAS GOTTA GO! -- A ROOMMATE SURVIVAL GUIDE.
Proof that its guidelines really work is this plain fact: I have continued to share my living environment with roommates for over 35 years.

Sharing my living expenses with carefully chosen roommates has allowed me to follow my passion for art. Visit my website Sylvia Chase Fine Art for a look at this other aspect of my life.
